Why do shadow and reflection matter?
- Contact shadow and reflection
- A contact shadow is the soft, dark area where the product meets the surface; it grounds the product. A reflection is the mirror-like image cast onto a glossy surface. Both help the eye read the product as real and three-dimensional.
A product with no shadow or reflection often looks cut-and-pasted, floating and fake. The right shadow and reflection remove this 'floating' effect and give the product weight and realism. For the shooting basics see how to take product photos, and for a marketplace white background see how to get a white background.
Which shadow/reflection do you use when?
| Effect | When | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Soft contact shadow | White-background marketplace main image | Product looks grounded, background stays clean |
| Directional (drop) shadow | Studio / campaign image | Depth and a dramatic light feel |
| Mirror reflection | Tech, cosmetics, jewellery, glossy/glass items | Strong, luxurious, premium perception |
| Soft (faint) reflection | Elegant but understated presentation | Premium yet non-distracting look |
| No shadow/reflection | Transparent-background sprite/icon | Objective but flat; weak as a hero image |
How do you get a grounded look step by step?
- Soften the light: A hard single light creates a sharp, ugly shadow; light diffused through a curtain/paper gives a natural, soft shadow.
- Place the shadow UNDER the product: The contact shadow should be darkest at the base and soften outward, with no gap between product and shadow.
- Use a glossy surface for reflection: Acrylic, glass or polished; the reflection should start right under the product and fade with distance.
- Don't overdo it: A too-dark shadow or a too-sharp/long reflection looks fake. Keep it natural, subtle and physically correct.
- Don't change the product: Only the surface, shadow and light are arranged; the product's colour, shape and true condition are preserved.
How do you get a reflective/shadowed result without a reshoot?
Without a glossy surface, a light box or retouching, upload your existing product photo to the İlanyap Product Studio and pick the Reflective Surface function: the AI keeps the product and stands it on a glossy surface, adding a crisp mirror reflection and a soft contact shadow beneath it. For a simpler result, Professional Studio builds a soft-shadowed cove; Pure White Background leaves a subtle, natural shadow for marketplaces. The product itself stays the same in every option.
